Businesses Are Doing More Before Coming to Agencies

Clients are using AI tools to build brands before contacting agencies. Learn why this head start is a positive shift and where agency support still drives real value.

More and more, we’re seeing that businesses are approaching us with a head start. Either they've designed a logo, chosen their brand colours, set up their social accounts and sometimes even built a basic prototype themselves. Accessible AI tools have lowered the barriers enabling anyone to visualise their idea with just a few prompts. The speed of ideation is genuinely impressive and makes us pause and consider the touchpoints where we provide the most value.

This largely changes how we approach the first conversation. We go back to the fundamentals of branding, marketing and advertising, which we centre around our understanding of the business’ history, the objectives, the service model and where we see opportunities for improvement and growth.

Why Businesses Getting a Head Start is a Good Thing.

A few years ago platforms like Canva and Squarespace came onto the scene to break down the walls of intro-level graphic design and website building. Clients could get a template site up quickly and handle more of their day to day design work internally. The ripple effective following this, was actually that the other tools in this space also drastically improved. Within the space of 6 months, the Figma platform raced ahead of Adobe and our agency shifted 90% of our design work to being Figma-based. More recently, the explosion of capability with AI tools & models takes this even further by generating copy, images, logos and full site layouts from simple prompts. A new business owner can create a logo, build a site and develop a 6 month marketing strategy for social media in a matter of days.

Cool? Yes. Fast? Yes. Good? Well, that’s the question.

For many businesses this is a practical decision. Let’s be real, budgets are always tight, but ideas are free and momentum matters. Getting a project live quickly allows you to visualise an idea, get feedback from an audience and work out what the project really needs before the business commits to a larger marketing investment.

They (usually) arrive with a clearer sense of how they want the brand to look, who they're speaking to and what they like and don't like. In our case, having a head start means that the briefs we get have more informed ideas, changing the conversation back to the ‘Why?’.

Where Agency Support Makes the Difference

The role of the agency is shifting - no doubt about it. Rather than creating everything from scratch, agencies are increasingly refining, connecting and strengthening what's already there.

A DIY start can look great, but there are gaps that are easy to miss when building alone (you don’t know what you don’t know). Here’s a few of the areas that we keep circling back to.

Consistency & Intent:

AI tools like Chat GPT and Claude are just LLMs (Large Language Models), stringing words and images together at an incredibly fast rate. They will confidently tell you their recommendations and apologise profusely if you call them out. The backflip (decision swapping) is way too quick, the evidence validation too lax and they shouldn’t be trusted for any meaningful decisions. There is no grasp of the bigger picture.

And some of the gaps we continually see:

Branding. Generated logos and brand boards might look and feel great on first pass, but the lack of knowledge of origin means originality is impossible to prove and narratives become weaker. Everything starts to look uninspired and generic.

Website structure and SEO. A site can look polished and still be difficult for search engines to read. Page structure, metadata, load speed and content all affect whether the right people find it. It’s often more human work to undo the bad AI work.

Marketing. Strategies are grounded in experience. Knowing who to target, which channels are worth the time and what each one should achieve is what turns activity into results. The importance here is accountability and intent. The original intent should be owned by us and the tools to explore and expand.

Analytics and tracking. Without proper tracking, it's impossible to know what's working. Setting up analytics from the start means decisions can be based on real data instead of guesswork.

A Headstart is Only the Beginning

The most productive partnerships are the ones where businesses bring their vision and initiative and agencies bring the strategy and technical expertise to support it. Getting a head start and testing ideas is a good thing and something we encourage. In most cases, it helps you to know the business, project or idea well enough to brief us clearly, so that we can have a deeper conversation more quickly.
